We finally have some long-awaited updates, and the news is… mostly good! Let’s break it all down by state and what it means for the letter writing community!
✅ Texas Is Safe… For Now
After weeks of uncertainty, we can officially exhale — Texas is safe. The bill introduced in the state legislature never made it to the House floor for a vote, meaning it did not reach the Governor’s desk and ultimately failed to pass.
In total, similar bills failed in six states:
Texas
Arkansas
Florida
Maryland
Mississippi
Illinois
But don’t get too comfortable...
👀 Keep an Eye on These Two States
While many bills are off the table (for now), New Jersey and Ohio are still in play. Their legislative sessions don’t end until December 31, 2025, so it’s essential that we stay vigilant and ready.
🗽 New York Is a No-Go
Unfortunately, the situation in New York hasn’t improved. Although the bills there also didn’t pass, the fact that they were introduced at all was enough to prompt most sweepstakes companies to cease operations in the state. If you’re a New Yorker, most platforms will no longer credit your AMOE entries — even if sent before the bans were enforced.
🌵 Arizona: A Unique Case
In Arizona, Modo has pulled out after being issued a cease and desist. However, other sweepstakes companies operating in the state have not received similar notices and are still crediting entries. If you're in Arizona, avoid Modo for now, but other platforms remain safe to use.
📮 Modo’s Monthly Credit Schedule — and Arizona Uncertainty
Big update from Modo: Live support has confirmed that they are reverting to their old system of crediting AMOE entries once per month, specifically at the end of the month.
Here’s what that likely means:
✉️ Envelopes received in April/May should be credited in June
✉️ Envelopes received in June would then be credited in July
And so on...
While we’re hopeful Modo improves this process or adds transparency, for now, this monthly cadence seems to be the new normal.
⚠️ Arizona Writers — A Risky Situation
Arizona residents face a particularly tricky situation. Modo has announced that Arizona accounts will be closed on June 23rd, but due to their once-a-month crediting system, it’s unclear whether entries sent in June will be processed in time.
To make matters more confusing:
Some support reps say they will not be credited before the cutoff
Others claim they will be processed and credited
With conflicting information from their own team, there’s no guaranteed answer. If you're an Arizona writer considering mailing to Modo this month, just know there’s risk involved, and entries might not count.
⚠️ The Clock Is Ticking
The biggest takeaway from all of this? We never know which state is next. Legislative threats can pop up fast, and sweepstakes companies tend to react even faster. Use the next six months wisely before Congress reconvenes. Write as much as you can now — don’t fumble this golden window of opportunity.
⚜️ Louisiana: Time-Sensitive Writing
With Louisiana’s ban going into effect on August 1st, it's best to stop writing to companies with long processing times (6+ weeks). Focus on faster processors like Modo, Kickr, and especially Stake while you still can.
